HOT TIME ON THE OLD GLOBE

Imagine palm trees draped with pythons in Central Park. Picture yourself being rowed down Hollywood Boulveard by a gondolier from a country that no longer exists. The time may come when summer vacation is taken in Antarctica, where tall pines whisper and cool breezes blow. Of course you’ll have to make your reservations about 20 years in advance. It’s the new hot destination and, after all, it’s a small island.

According to most reputable scientists, if we don’t change our ways, we’ll really be changing our ways. Global Warming. Climate Change to the squeamish. And to the ostrich types among us, Bad Science. Well, as is always the case with unpleasant news, nothing beats denial as a coping mechanism.

It is difficult to connect specific weather events to global warming, but here are just the facts, ma’am. After existing for thousands of years, a piece of the Larsen ice shelf bigger than Rhode Island collapsed in 2002. Artic ice has decreased 40 percent since 1960. At the current rate, by 2070 Glacier National Park will have melted. If Greenland melts, sea levels will increase up to 21 feet. To put things in perspective, you could be traveling to Missouri for the latest fashions. The Great White Way will have moved to say, Akron, Ohio. We at FootageBank HD will have relocated to Topeka. Where the action is.

Nearly 2,000 species of plants and animals are picking up and moving 3.8 miles per decade closer to the poles. In Yellowstone there is a little moth on which the Grizzlies fatten up during the height of tourist season. This little fellow lives high up above the tree line where tourists fear to tread. The moths are disappearing, but, not to worry, the tourists are increasing down below. The bears will figure it out.

You will have to watch out for all those nasty diseases let loose when the half-thawed corpse of that interesting Ice-Age man emerges from what used to be permafrost, but let’s look on the bright side. Hardly anyone will die of frostbite.

At FootageBank HD, we’re proud to bring you a new collection of global warming shots from the award winning series “Face of Earth.” This footage looks at what we are losing and examines the planet we still have. With education and change in mind, we remain hopeful. To view and download clips about global warming, click here.
