IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME

Having your teeth drilled can seem to take an eternity, while 60 minutes on a massage table passes by so quickly you wonder if you should be charged for the whole hour.  Albert Einstein explained it this way, “Two events taking place at the points A and B of a system K are simultaneous if they appear at the same instant when observed from the middle point M, of the interval AB.”  Get it?  Few do.  But he was basically surmising that time is indeed relative.

Let us consider stopping time for, ahem, just a minute.  Ponce de Leon, Oscar Wilde, and Cher have all searched for that illusive Fountain of Youth.  It was Ponce who got us all excited about the possibility of undermining, if not the Grim Reaper, his sidekick Old Man Time.  Sometime around 1513, Ponce, then governor of Puerto Rico, asked Spain’s King Charles V if he might go in search of a magical little watering hole he’d heard about from the locals.  Charles agreed, but very wisely insisted that Ponce pay for the ships and crew for his dubious enterprise.  Turns out it wasn’t even a mirage, but he had a nice tour of what is now Florida and inspired a metaphorical F.O.Y. courtesy of Disney.

The search continues.  As recently as 1998, when researchers at the University of Texas discovered an enzyme that enables cells to avoid aging and dying, trading of stock in the biotech research company that was a partner with the university had to be halted.  The stock price increased more than 43 percent.

We all experienced the relativity of time in March when most of the U.S.A. made its annual switch to Daylight Saving Time, and if you think it’s all just an abstraction, consider this.  During the Vietnam War, an American man asserted to his local draft board that standard time was the official time for recording births in his state in the year he was born, not DST.  He’d been born at 12:00 a.m. DST, but under standard time that put his birthday a day earlier which gave him a higher lottery number.  He won his case and avoided the draft.
